Disability Accommodations

Princeton Seminary welcomes those with disabilities and strives to provide an environment in which all students have equal access to educational opportunities and the campus community. The Seminary accords students with documented disabilities appropriate and reasonable academic accommodations. Students who seek some academic modification or accommodation for their documented disability should contact the Coordinator of Academic Support. Accommodations or academic adjustments are determined through an interactive process that includes an intake interview. The Seminary will collaborate with the student to determine an accommodation that is supported by the documentation, effective for the student, and does not compromise the essential requirements of the program.

Required documentation of a disability and need for a modification or accommodation will come from a medical professional, and will include:

  • a diagnosis of a current impairment (ordinarily within one year, 3 years for a learning disability)
  • the basis for the diagnosis
  • how major life activities are impacted by the impairment
  • suggested modifications or accommodations
  • how the disability relates to a requested modification or accommodation
  • the qualifications of the individual preparing the documentation

Any expense a student incurs for testing and diagnosis of a disability is borne by the student. The Seminary reserves the right to conduct its own independent evaluation if it so chooses.

Seminary ​Rights and Responsibilities​

Princeton Seminary is committed to providing students with disabilities equal access to the exceptional education opportunities available. After reviewing clinical documentation, the Coordinator of Academic Support, in concert with the student, will determine reasonable accommodations for eligible students.

The Office of Academic Support has the responsibility to:

  • Review requests for accommodation and documentation submitted and respond in a timely manner regarding its determination.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student documentation and communications.
  • Provide reasonable academic, physical, and technological accommodations for students in Seminary sponsored courses, programs, and activities.
  • Act in accordance with federal and state laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability.

The Office of Academic Support has the right to:

  • Require appropriate, timely, and professional documentation demonstrating the nature and extent of the functional limitations caused by a condition.
  • Deny a request for accommodations for reasons such as failure to submit required documentation, or where the documentation does not indicate that the accommodation is necessary.
  • Refuse a request for an unreasonable accommodation or one which would alter an essential element of a course or degree.
  • Discuss specific disability-related information with Seminary faculty or staff on a need-to-know basis in order to perform its functions. For example, information may be released to our Security Office for emergency planning and response.
  • Release disability information to a third party only with the signed consent of the student.

Students' Rights and Responsibilities

Students with disabilities attending the Seminary are entitled to the same rights, privileges, and opportunities as all students at this institution. Individuals with disabilities are protected by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as amended, as well as the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination. Students entering the post-secondary setting should be aware that they are now responsible for identification, advocacy, planning, decision making, transitioning, and accommodation implementation. Therefore, it is important for students to understand both their rights and responsibilities relating to their disability in the academic setting.

Students who are self-identifying with the intent of requesting accommodations have a responsibility to:

  • Follow all procedures for registration with the Office of Academic Support including submission of appropriate and current professional documentation. This documentation should clearly identify the disability and detail the functional limitations caused by the condition. The medical professional must clearly specify the accommodations needed.
  • Read and respond to all correspondence from the Office of Academic Support concerning the request for accommodations.
  • Self-identify in a timely manner, meeting deadlines and allowing reasonable time for review of documentation and implementation arrangements prior to the need for accommodations.
  • Follow the Seminary’s procedures when receiving accommodations including any procedures which require interaction with professors or staff.
  • Communicate with the Office of Academic Support every semester in order to provide notification of approved accommodations to instructors.
  • Communicate with instructors at least two weeks prior to implementation in order to make arrangements for accommodations.
  • Notify the Office of Academic Support if the approved accommodations are not working or are no longer needed.

Student Rights include:

  • The right not to self-identify if accommodations are not being requested.
  • The right to equal access to courses, facilities, Seminary-sponsored courses, programs and activities. If accommodations are required to ensure equal access, the student must register with the Office of Academic Support to determine eligibility and appropriate accommodations.
  • The right to be protected from discrimination.
  • The right to make decisions regarding the release of personal disability information.
  • The right to challenge decisions or submit a complaint through the Resolution Process.

Resolution Policy

The Office of Academic Support uses an interactive process of consulting with the student to evaluate each individual’s situation and documentation, and determine the appropriate, reasonable accommodations. In many cases, an outside consultant may be engaged to review the student’s documentation as well. The office communicates with the student about its decisions. A student who believes that the office did not follow its procedures in the determination or consider relevant information in the determination may request a reconsideration of the decision.

The Process for Resolving Issues with the Office of Academic Support, regarding Disability Services, is as follows:

Request for Reconsideration: The student should request a meeting with the Coordinator of Academic Support to present additional information and/or documentation and to discuss the nature of the issue or complaint. This meeting should be requested within 30 days of the determination at issue. For concerns relating to denial of accommodations, the Coordinator will engage an outside consultant to review the documentation and provide recommendations to the Office. The Coordinator may contact faculty, administrators or professionals that can provide information pertinent to the case. If confidential information is to be released to or received by a third party not affiliated with the University, the student will be asked to sign a release of information form. Following the review of the request for reconsideration, the Coordinator will notify the student of its decision within 30 days.

Review by Associate Dean for Academic Administration: In situations other than concerns involving discrimination, the student is required to first seek reconsideration by the Coordinator of Academic Support. If the issue is not resolved through reconsideration, the student may request a review of the process by the Associate Dean for Academic Administration within 30 days of receiving the decision on reconsideration. The student should submit a detailed written account of the issue and sign and date the document. The Associate Dean will make an inquiry into the complaint and may contact faculty, administrators or professionals that can provide information pertinent to the case. Every effort will be made to resolve the grievance within 30 days or as expeditiously as possible. The student will be contacted in writing with a final decision on the complaint.
