El impacto de las pandemias del 2020 (COVID-19, el racismo y una economía que se desmorona) está repercutiendo en los vecindarios y congregaciones de todo el país y el mundo. The impact of the pandemics of 2020 — COVID-19, racism, and a crumbling economy — is reverberating through neighborhoods and congregations across the country and the globe. Faith leaders seek to minister without the customary practices of gathering for worship, community service, and providing pastoral care. These global pandemics are bringing to bear many injustices and circumstances that warrant the church's call to be faithful to its mission. The Herencia Lectures, online in 2020, will explore the ongoing impact of these pandemics on the local and global church and offer a vision for developing a creative way forward, influenced by God's revelation of "doing a new thing" –Isaiah 43:19.

La vida en el desierto: Iglesia, pandemia, racismo y opresión internalizada.
Vivimos en el desierto, y es en el desierto que los hijos de Dios claman desde los márgenes de la opresión. Estos tiempos sin precedentes nos han llevado a una realidad que nunca imaginamos. La pandemia COVID-19, los asesinatos de personas negras y morenas por parte de la policía, la esterilización involuntaria de mujeres inmigrantes por parte de ICE y los cambios institucionales son solo algunos de los desafíos que enfrentamos. Como clero, estamos en primera línea. ¿Cómo lideramos en este momento? ¿Cuál es nuestro mensaje durante estos tiempos difíciles? Nos reuniremos para examinar y reflexionar sobre este momento en el ministerio y lo que significa ser "la voz del que clama en el desierto".

Life in the Wilderness: Church, Pandemic, Racism, and Internalized Oppression
We are living in the wilderness, and, in the wilderness, God’s children are crying out from the margins of oppression. These unprecedented times have thrust us into a reality we never imagined. The COVID-19 pandemic, the murders of Black and Brown people by police, the involuntary sterilization of immigrant women by ICE, and institutional changes are just a few of the challenges we are facing. As clergy, we are in the front lines. How are we leading at this moment? What is our message during these troubling times? We will gather to examine this moment in ministry, and consider what it means to be “the voice of one crying in the wilderness.”

Identifying and Navigating Enduring Vulnerabilities
Our experiences during these moments with family, parishioners, community residents, and so many in our world of ministry can be quite challenging. Perhaps you wonder if your present call is under siege. As servants, we seek to be strong and supportive without taking into consideration our questions and vulnerabilities. We will gather in small groups to claim our fears, share our joys, and experience the depth of both our humanity and spirituality.

La pandemia del COVID-19 como amplificador de la injusticia estructural: una reflexión del estado brasileño con lecciones para el resto de nosotros.
Inspirada por las declaraciones del cardenal Czerny al comparar el COVID-19 con una lupa, esta conferencia reflexiona sobre el trágico impacto de la pandemia en Brasil, cuestionando las estructuras racializadas de la sociedad brasileña y el papel de la religión en la devastación causada por la pandemia, particularmente entre las poblaciones más vulnerables. Si bien destaca el papel de la religión en la construcción de las injusticias estructurales amplificadas por la pandemia, esta conferencia también destaca las respuestas religiosas relevantes que han ayudado a construir resiliencia y resistencia en medio del sufrimiento causado por la crisis actual.

The COVID-19 Pandemic as an Amplifier of Structural Injustice: a Reflection on the Brazilian Case with Lessons for the Rest of Us
Inspired by Cardinal Czerny’s remarks comparing COVID-19 to a magnifying glass, this lecture reflects on the tragic impact of the pandemic in Brazil, interrogating the racialized structures of the Brazilian society and the role of religion in the devastation caused by the pandemic, particularly among the most vulnerable populations. While highlighting the role of religion in the construction of the structural injustices amplified by the pandemic, this lecture also underscores relevant religious responses which have helped build resilience and resistance amid the suffering caused by the current crisis.

Damaris D. Whittaker es una ministra de la Iglesia de Cristo Unida (UCC) y una teóloga pública profundamente apasionada por la justicia social. Aunque creció en la tradición Pentecostal, su viaje personal de fe ha sido diverso. Se graduó en el Seminario Teológico de Nueva York (D.Min.) y tiene experiencia en el manejo de las finanzas del ministerio, el aumento de la administración y la asesoría y orientación al personal de la iglesia. Damaris D. Whittaker is a United Church of Christ (UCC) minister and a public theologian deeply passionate about social justice. Although raised in the Pentecostal tradition, her personal faith journey has been diverse. A graduate of New York Theological Seminary (DMin), she is experienced in managing ministry finances, increasing stewardship, and providing mentorship and guidance to church staff. She has a spirit-led style of preaching and leads worship services that are reflective of the cultural diversity of her congregations. She preaches in English and Spanish.

Victor Aloyo, Jr. es el Decano Asociado de Diversidad Institucional y Participación Comunitaria en el Seminario Teológico de Princeton y pastor principal de La Iglesia Presbiteriana Nuevas Fronteras. Aloyo obtuvo títulos del Colegio of Nuevo Rochelle (BA), el Seminario Teológico de Princeton (MDiv) y la Universidad de Pennsylvania (EdD). Su trabajo doctoral se centró en navegar la diversidad y la inclusión en un marco de justicia social. Con más de 30 años de participación comunitaria, relaciones multiculturales y liderazgo congregacional en Nueva Jersey y Nueva York, Aloyo tiene el dedo en el pulso de los problemas predominantes de muchas culturas en la actualidad.

Victor Aloyo, Jr. is the associate dean of institutional diversity and community engagement at Princeton Theological Seminary and head pastor of La Iglesia Presbiteriana Nuevas Fronteras. Aloyo holds degrees from the College of New Rochelle (BA), Princeton Theological Seminary (MDiv), and the University of Pennsylvania (EdD). His doctoral work focused on navigating diversity and inclusion within a framework of social justice. With more than 30 years of community engagement, multicultural relations, and congregational leadership in New Jersey and New York, Aloyo has his finger on the pulse of the prevailing issues of many cultures today.

Raimundo César Barreto Jr. es profesor asistente de cristianismo mundial en el Seminario Teológico de Princeton. Ministro bautista ordenado, tiene un doctorado del Seminario Teológico de Princeton y títulos del Seminario Teológico Bautista del Norte en Brasil y la Escuela de Teología McAfee / Mercer University. Raimundo César Barreto Jr. is assistant professor of world Christianity at Princeton Theological Seminary. An ordained Baptist minister, he holds a PhD from Princeton Theological Seminary, and degrees from the Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Brazil and McAfee School of Theology/Mercer University. Before joining the Princeton Seminary faculty, he taught at the Northeastern Baptist Seminary and at Faculdade Batista Brasileira in his home country, having also served as director of the Freedom and Justice Division of the Baptist World Alliance (BWA). He remains involved in ecumenical and interfaith work in connection with denominational and ecumenical ecclesiastical bodies, including the American Baptist Churches USA, the Baptist World Alliance, and the National Council of Churches USA. His teaching and research span different disciplines, which include world Christianity, liberation and postcolonial/decolonial theologies, Latin American and Latino/a Religions, and intercultural and interfaith relations.
