Psalm 143

“NAMI” stands for “National Alliance on Mental Illness.” As an active volunteer for NAMI, engaged in helping people to recover from the mental illnesses that so interrupt lives, I sought commentary to guide my understanding of Psalm 143 and came upon a phrase that describes vividly what is experienced by a those who fight to recover their health: “… our spirits are overwhelmed.” And another phrase that describes the ensuing grief experience: “… the mourning soul.” Considering mental illness “the enemy” while reading Psalm 143 allows the psalm to become an especially meaningful prayer … and a realistic one, for recovery is today a realistic goal. As you read the psalm, please keep in your prayers those who are engaged in the struggle against mental illness.
