Educated at Yale University (BA) and Princeton Seminary (MDiv), he has taught at Princeton Seminary, Princeton University, Eastern University, and Luther Seminary. He is an ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and served four years as a parish pastor. He continues to be active as a teacher and preacher in congregational contexts.
