Paintings by Philip Lee Smith on Exhibit at Princeton Seminary’s Erdman Art Gallery

Princeton, NJ, May 28, 2008–“Passion of Christ for Us” featuring paintings by Philip Lee Smith will be on display at Princeton Theological Seminary’s Erdman Art Gallery from Sunday, June 1 through Friday, July 11.

As poets use words to give meaning to our world, artists use paint. Philip Lee Smith, a self-defined “lover of beauty,” senses the poetry around us but needs paint and brush to express in physical terms his thoughts in visual images. The challenge to create—to add something to the beauty of nature—is fundamental to his painting.

Smith’s art changes with the varied “looks” of the universe. Whether his painting is used to analyze a scientific principle, or to philosophize about an expanding universe or rejoice in God’s great gifts, he is trying to deliver a message. In that sense he considers himself a “message painter,” using both abstract and representational forms to make his statement. And the emotional response to the message may be one of hope, wonder, or a simple reminder of a viewpoint the viewer may share.

A scientist by education and a business executive by trade and education, Smith gained his training as a painter after retirement.

The Erdman Art Gallery is in its seventh year of presenting local and national artists for the benefit of the community. The gallery is located in the Erdman Center, 20 Library Place, at the Center of Continuing Education at Princeton Theological Seminary. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, 2:30 to 9:00 p.m.

An opening reception will take place on Sunday, June 1 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m in the Erdman Art Gallery. The exhibit and opening reception are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Mary Grace Royal at 609.497.7995, or email coned@ptsem.edu.
