New Office of Multicultural Relations Established at Princeton Seminary
Princeton, NJ, June 25, 2007–Princeton Theological Seminary is pleased to announce the creation of an Office of Multicultural Relations. The new office, located in the Department of Student Life, will focus on the concerns of international students, promote campus programs relating to opportunities for and appreciation of multi- and crosscultural experiences, facilitate the life and work of the racial-ethnic councils of the faculty, and assist various Seminary constituencies in providing learning opportunities regarding multicultural and racial-ethnic concerns. The office is an effort to live out the Seminary’s mission statement, to “embrace a rich racial and ethnic diversity and the breadth of communions represented in the worldwide church.”

Princeton, NJ, June 6, 2007–Ever since Cornelius van Til’s thorough critique of Karl Barth in the first part of the twentieth century, the conservative elements of popular Christianity in the United States—known broadly as “evangelicals”—have generally followed van Til’s lead in their interaction with Barth’s theological work. “The critical stance of Cornelius van Til toward the theology of Karl Barth has long shaped the reception of Barth in evangelical circles,” says Clifford Anderson, curator of special collections at Princeton Theological Seminary. “However, a new generation of evangelical theologians have been rediscovering Barth as an ally in their struggle against the cultural captivity of Christianity. The purpose of this conference is to bring together evangelicals and ‘Barthians’ to talk about lingering points of disagreement and emerging points of commonality.”

Princeton Theological Seminary Graduates 214 Students May 19
Princeton, NJ, May 20, 2007–Princeton Theological Seminary held its 195th commencement exercises on Saturday, May 19 at 4:00 p.m. in the Princeton University Chapel. Seminary president Dr. Iain R. Torrance addressed the graduates. Torrance was awarded an honorary degree (LHD) from King College in Bristol, Tennessee. Dr. Gregory Jordan, president of King College, and Dr. Richard Ray, a trustee of King College, presented the honorary doctorate to Torrance during commencement.

Malaysian Artist Hanna-Cheriyan Varghese to Exhibit at Princeton Seminary’s Erdman Art Gallery
Princeton, NJ, March 15, 2007–Malaysian artist Hanna-Cheriyan Varghese will exhibit her art in a show called “The Cry of My Soul” at Princeton Seminary’s Erdman Art Gallery from Monday, April 16 to Friday, May 25. Varghese has worked with different mediums including oil, metal-tooling, and woodblock printing, but her current passion is painting with acrylic on canvas and batik-dyeing on fabric. Of her work she says, “For a long time I was searching to find a way to paint biblical/spiritual themes. The artwork by Asian Christian artists in Image (a quarterly magazine of the Asian Christian Art Association) inspired me to express my own faith and spirituality in tangible terms. That is the cry of my soul.”

Princeton Seminary Receives New Scholarship Endowment
Princeton, NJ, February 8, 2007–Princeton Theological Seminary has established the Reverend Iu Su-iong Scholarship Endowment Fund, with a gift given by Iu’s son, Alexander K. Young, a 1954 M.Div. and 1961 Th.D. graduate of the Seminary. The scholarship assists an M.A.T.S., Th.M., or Ph.D. student or visiting scholar, with preference given to those producing scholarly work on the influence of Taiwanese church history. The endowment represents the Reverend Iu’s long dedication and contributions as a professor of church history at Tainan Theological Seminary in Taiwan, moderator of the Presbyterian Church General Assembly in Taiwan, well-known author, and beloved pastor.

Princeton Seminary Offers New Course on Preparing for and Preventing Disasters
Princeton, NJ, January 18, 2007–In the wake of recent events like hurricanes, tsunamis, and the 9/11 disaster, this spring Princeton Theological Seminary’s Center of Continuing Education will offer a new course titled Ministry, Conflict, and Cataclysms. The course, intended for Seminary students, clergy, leaders of nonprofit agencies, law enforcement personnel, disaster agency staff, contingency planners, and professionals in local government, will meet weekly on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. beginning January 29 and ending April 23, 2007. Princeton, NJ, December 12, 2006–New Jersey artist Jim Fuess will present an exhibit titled “Rage, Terror, Flowers, and Sunsets” at Princeton Theological Seminary’s Erdman Art Gallery, beginning on Monday, January 8 and running through Friday, February 16. Fuess works with liquid acrylic paint on canvas. He considers most of his work to be abstract, but one can see recognizable forms, faces, gestures, and movements within each piece. Addressing Gang Violence Subject of Seminar October 26 at Princeton Seminary
Princeton, NJ, October 16, 2006–With gang violence on the upswing in central New Jersey and nationally, Princeton Theological Seminary’s Center of Continuing Education will host a seminar titled “Empowering Communities against Gang Violence” on Thursday, October 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Erdman Hall. Pension Protection Act Creates New Opportunity for Giving to PTS
Princeton, NJ, August 24, 2006–On August 4, 2006, Congress passed the Pension Protection Act of 2006, which makes it possible, for the first time, for donors to make tax-efficient charitable gifts from IRAs and Roth IRAs during their lifetimes. In the past, donors who made gifts from their retirement accounts withdrew funds and included those amounts in their gross income. Now for a limited period of time, owners of IRAs who are already required to take distributions from their retirement accounts can transfer up to $100,000 to a qualified tax-exempt public charity. This contribution does not create a charitable deduction, but it does allow the donor to exclude the IRA distribution from gross income.
