Westminster John Knox Press Becomes Publisher of Theology Today; James F. Kay Named Editor

Princeton, NJ, October 12, 2005– Princeton Theological Seminary is pleased to announce a new partnership between Theology Today and Westminster John Knox Press (WJK). The Seminary also announces a new editorial staff for the journal.

Under the terms of the partnership with WJK, Princeton Seminary will retain editorial control of Theology Today, with WJK taking over distribution, production, and financial operations. The change takes effect with the April 2006 issue. “I don’t believe anyone understands the subscriber base of Theology Today better than Westminster John Knox,” says Dr. Iain Torrance, president of the Seminary. “I am confident that this move will bring the journal into closer contact with the church, and enable it to be an even more effective bridge between the academy and the parish.”

The Seminary has appointed James F. Kay as the journal’s new editor. Gordon Mikoski will serve as book editor. “I welcome the call to serve Theology Today and to partner with our new publishers to provide readers thoughtful and timely articles, reviews, and features,” says Kay. “Founded at the end of World War II as a journal for the ecumenical church, Theology Today will move forward to foster intellectual encounters between Christianity and other world religions, especially with the other Abrahamic faiths. With the assistance of my colleague Gordon Mikoski, the journal will also encourage reflection on emerging forms of church life and mission, while continuing to introduce our readers to significant new figures and movements.”

Kay, the Seminary’s Joe R. Engle Professor of Homiletics and Liturgics, was editor of the Princeton Seminary Bulletin from 1994–2000. He is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the Academy of Homiletics, the Duodecim Theological Society, and the New Haven Theological Discussion Group. His book, Christus Praesens: A Reconsideration of Rudolf Bultmann’s Christology, was reissued by Eerdmans in 2004 on the tenth anniversary of its original publication. Kay succeeds editors Patrick D. Miller, professor emeritus of Old Testament theology, and Ellen Charry, associate professor of systematic theology.

Mikoski is professor of Christian education at the Seminary and an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church (USA). He succeeds Clifton Black, professor of biblical theology.

Theology Today, a quarterly ecumenical journal of Christian theology founded in 1944, publishes articles on a wide range of classical and contemporary issues in Christian theology by many of the finest theologians working today. WJK is the trade and publishing imprint of the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation.
