    Biography Statement

    Dr. Renata Furst is a professor of Scripture and Spirituality at the Oblate School of Theology, as well as the Director of Studies for theology students at Assumption Seminary. She completed her doctoral work on the Book of Hosea in the Old Testament with a fellowship from the Hispanic Theological initiative, a program of the Pew Foundation. Renata approaches her work and scholarship from a bi-lingual/bicultural perspective. She grew up in Honduras, Central America, but immigrated to Canada, where she finished her graduated studies in French at the University of Montreal. At the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Furst teaches Torah, Wisdom Literature, Prophets and Fundamental Principles of Spiritual Direction at the Masters of Divinity level. At the doctoral level, the course she teaches—Scripture as a Source for Ministry—introduces students to a variety of hermeneutical methods which can then be transferred to a pastoral situation. Renata has published in several languages, including the Conozca su Biblia series in Spanish with Fortress Press. Renata Furst is a spiritual director trained to give the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. She is currently training other spiritual directors in the San Antonio, Texas area.
