The 2009 class of Engle Fellows was comprised of 24 PTS alumni and 19 other Fellows representing 13 Seminaries and Divinity Schools.

This year's Preacher/Pastor-in-Residence was the Rev. Michael Lindvall, PTS alumnus and pastor of Brick Presbyterian Church in NYC.

The three morning convocation lectures were given by the Rev. Jacqui Lewis of Middle Collegiate Church in NYC. Her series was entitled "Preaching:Rehearsing the Reign of God in our Multicultural World."

Workshops at the 2009 Institute were led by PTS Faculty members Charles Bartow, Michael Brothers, Nancy Gross, Rob Lancaster, Cleo LaRue, Randy Nichols and Luke Powery.

The 8th Annual Engle Institute will be held in conjuction with

the Hispanic Leadership Program's Summer Conference, June 6-11, 2010

Registration will be available online Fall 2009.

About the Engle Institute

The Engle Institute is a weeklong continuing education event that was envisioned and made possible by the dream and generosity of Joe R. Engle, a member of the First Presbyterian Church in New York City. The institute is designed to nurture and strengthen the craft of those who preach, whether weekly or occasionally, whether in city, suburb, small town, rural community, or other specialized ministries. Engle Fellows and faculty gather for the week to participate together in the hospitality of the seminar room, the dinner table, and the chapel pew. Engle Fellows reconnect vocationally with friends as they practice the craft of preaching in the company of colleagues.

The Wellspring of Worship

Engle Fellows and faculty worship together each evening in Miller Chapel. In keeping with its ministerial focus, the Engle Institute invites a pastor to serve as the preacher for the week.

The Practice of Proclamation

The Engle Institute offers a unique, interactive approach to preaching renewal. Rather than highlight a slate of national pulpit “stars,” the Engle Institute is designed to encourage and nurture pastors who preach regularly in local contexts. Through hands-on workshops, seminars, tutorials, and conversations, Engle Fellows are supported and challenged to seek excellence in their preaching vocations.

Fellowship with Faculty, Community with Colleagues

The tone of the Engle Institute is collegial. Engle Fellows and faculty participate together in the hospitality of the seminar room, the dinner table, and the chapel pew. Engle Fellows reconnect vocationally with friends as they practice the craft of preaching in the company of colleagues.

Is the Engle Institute for you? It is if:

  • you are a seminary graduate (M.Div.) and are in your first 2-8 years of ministry
  • you wish to nurture and strengthen your preaching vocation
  • you currently serve in a ministry context that requires regular preaching/worship responsibilities, or you plan to seek a call in such a context
  • you are able to attend the entire week of the Engle Institute, including early arrival on Saturday if necessary, through Friday lunch
  • you have not attended the Engle Institute in the past
(former fellows will only be considered if there are openings after the original registration deadline)

Engle Fellowships
Those who participate in the Engle Institute receive a fellowship that covers the cost of tuition, on-campus (dormitory-style) housing, and meals eaten on campus.

Pulpit Supply Stipends
It is imperative that Engle Fellows arrive by the close of registration by 3:00 pm on Sunday afternoon. This may require you to travel to Princeton on Saturday. Pulpit supply stipends are available to help cover the cost of pulpit supply for the Sunday worship service you would miss.

Travel Scholarships
Travel scholarships are available and are made on the basis of need, with special consideration given to clergy serving economically disadvantaged parishes or congregations in minority communities.

Transportation
It is the responsibility of each Engle Fellow to arrange his/her transportation to the Seminary in order to arrive by 3:00 pm on Sunday. The Engle Institute will cover Saturday night lodging (in Seminary housing) if your travel arrangements require you to arrive a day early.

The town of Princeton is located an hour northeast of Philadelphia and an hour and a half southwest of New York City. Newark/Liberty International Airport is the most convenient airport, with direct and easy rail connection from the airport to Princeton via the Northeast Corridor Line. This trip takes a little longer than an hour. You can check train schedules online at www.njtransit.com. Conferees who drive to campus will have parking available in one of the Seminary’s parking areas. For detailed directions to the Seminary, visit http://www.ptsem.edu/About/directions.php.

Workshops and Practicums
Engle Fellows participate in daily seminars and workshops, some of which are in lecture/seminar format while others are preaching practicums. Early in the spring we will announce this year’s workshop options. Registered fellows will be able to make their requests for workshop choices at that time.

Past workshops have included:
“Preaching on the Cross in a Violent World,” “Reclaiming Narrative for Preaching,” “Voice and Embodiment,” “The Person of the Preacher,” “The Prophetic Word in Apocalyptic Times,” “Preaching to Churches in Conflict or Transition,” “Preaching Weddings and Funerals,” “Preaching and Lament,” “Preaching and Landscape,” “Paul and the Apocalyptic Gospel,” and “Preaching Stewardship.”

Engle Faculty
The Engle Institute uses members of Princeton Theological Seminary’s preaching and speech faculty, as well as other noted homileticians.

Institute Schedule
Acceptance as an Engle Fellow means that an individual has agreed to participate fully in the weeklong conference. Is it imperative to arrive on Sunday afternoon in time for registration (12:00–3:00 p.m.) and orientation (4:00 p.m.), even if this requires travel to Princeton a day early.

The 2010 Institute will be coordinated by the Office for Continuing Education at the Seminary. Questions and inquiries can be addressed to coned@ptsem.edu or 609.497.7990.

“We have now experienced six years of the Engle Institute of Preaching at Princeton Seminary. It is now more clear than ever, based on the wonderful responses we have received, and the desire of many to repeat this week-long course, that providing encouragement, camaraderie, superb preaching leadership from some of this country's greatest preachers, and specialized traning in the art of good preaching has enabled over 300 younger ministers to achieve a level of competence in preaching which would not have been possible otherwise. This was our goal in 2002 and continues to be our goal today and in the future."
