Welcome to the
Joe R. Engle Institute of Preaching
Web Page

Princeton Theological Seminary is pleased to announce the sixth annual Joe R. Engle Institute of Preaching, scheduled for June 8–13, 2008.

This year the Engle Institute welcomes M.Div. graduates who graduated between 1999 and 2006. Up to fifty Engle Fellows (participants) will gather on Princeton Seminary’s campus for this year’s institute. Application is open to people who are currently serving a congregation or in some other ministry context, who have some regular responsibility for preaching and worship, or who intend to seek such a call.

About the Engle Institute

The Engle Institute is a weeklong continuing education event that was envisioned and made possible by the dream and generosity of Joe R. Engle, a member of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City. The institute is designed to nurture and strengthen the craft of those who preach, whether weekly or occasionally, whether in city, suburb, small town, rural community, or other specialized ministries. Engle Fellows and faculty gather for the week to participate together in the hospitality of the seminar room, the dinner table, and the chapel pew. Engle Fellows reconnect vocationally with friends as they practice the craft of preaching in the company of colleagues.

The Wellspring of Worship

Engle Fellows and faculty worship together each evening in Miller Chapel. In keeping with its ministerial focus, the Engle Institute invites a pastor to serve as the preacher for the week. This year we are pleased to welcome the Rev. Dr. David A. Davis, pastor and head of staff of the Nassau Presbyterian Church in Princeton, New Jersey, as the preacher/pastor-in-residence.

For further information about the Engle Institute see our brochure.

Registration Information

Registration for the 2008 Engle Fellowship is limited to fifty applicants who meet the selection criteria. Acceptance is on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to high demand and limited space, applications/registrations for M.Div. graduates from the Classes of 1999 to 2006 must be received by February 28, 2008. (After February 28 registration will be open to other qualified applicants.)

Is the Engle Institute for you? It is if:

  • you are a seminary graduate (M.Div.) who graduated between 1999 and 2006
  • you wish to nurture and strengthen your preaching vocation
  • you currently serve in a ministry context that requires regular preaching/worship responsibilities, or you plan to seek a call in such a context
  • you are able to attend the entire week of the Engle Institute, including early arrival on Saturday if necessary, through Friday lunch.

Engle Fellowships
Those who participate in the Engle Institute receive a fellowship that covers the cost of tuition, on-campus (dormitory-style) housing, and meals (except Tuesday dinner). We are also able to offer a limited number of travel scholarships.

Travel Scholarships
Travel scholarships are available and are made on the basis of need, with special consideration given to clergy serving economically disadvantaged parishes or congregations in minority communities. To apply for a travel scholarship, email a letter (300 words maximum) describing your situation and need to Michael Hegeman, coordinator for the Engle Institute of Preaching.

Pulpit Supply Stipends
It is imperative that Engle Fellows arrive by the close of registration by 3:00 pm on Sunday afternoon, June 8. This may require you to travel to Princeton on Saturday. Pulpit supply stipends are available to help cover the cost of pulpit supply for the Sunday worship service you would miss. To apply for a pulpit supply scholarship, email Michael Hegeman, coordinator for the Engle Institute. Please include the name and address of the church, the church treasurer or other financial officer, and the normal fee for pulpit supply.

Workshops and Practicums
The Engle Institute offers a unique, interactive approach to preaching renewal. Rather than highlight a slate of national pulpit “stars,” the Engle Institute is designed to encourage and nurture pastors who preach regularly in local contexts. Through hands-on workshops, seminars, tutorials, and conversations, Engle Fellows are supported and challenged to seek excellence in their preaching vocations.

Engle Fellows participate in daily seminars and workshops, some of which are in lecture/seminar format while others are preaching practicums. Early in the spring we will announce this year’s workshop options. Registered fellows will be able to make their requests for workshop choices at that time.

Past workshops have included:
“Preaching on the Cross in a Violent World,” “Reclaiming Narrative for Preaching,” “Voice and Embodiment,” “The Person of the Preacher,” “The Prophetic Word in Apocalyptic Times,” “Preaching to Churches in Conflict or Transition,” “Preaching Weddings and Funerals,” “Preaching and Lament,” “Preaching and Landscape,” “Paul and the Apocalyptic Gospel,” and “Preaching Stewardship.”

Engle Faculty
The Engle Institute uses members of Princeton Theological Seminary’s preaching and speech faculty, as well as other noted homileticians. Past faculty members have included Charles Bartow, Sally Brown, Michael Brothers, Eric Elnes, Cleo LaRue, Nancy Gross, Charles Harwick, Randy Nichols, Luke Powery, Dave Davis, Kristin Saldine, Michael Hegeman, Jerry Carter, and Fleming Rutledge. We will announce the Engle 2008 faculty early in the spring.

Transportation
It is the responsibility of each Engle Fellow to arrange his/her transportation to the Seminary in order to arrive by 3:00 pm on Sunday, June 8. The Engle Institute will cover Saturday night lodging (in Seminary housing) if your travel arrangements require you to arrive a day early.

The town of Princeton is located an hour northeast of Philadelphia and an hour and a half southwest of New York City. Newark/Liberty International Airport is the most convenient airport, with direct and easy rail connection from the airport to Princeton via the Northeast Corridor Line. This trip takes a little longer than an hour. You can check train schedules online at www.njtransit.com. Conferees who drive to campus will have parking available in one of the Seminary’s parking areas. For detailed directions to the Seminary, visit http://www.ptsem.edu/About/directions.php.

General Information
Acceptance as an Engle Fellow means that an individual has agreed to participate fully in the weeklong conference. Is it imperative to arrive on Sunday afternoon in time for registration (12:00–3:00 p.m.) and orientation (4:00 p.m.), even if this requires travel to Princeton a day early (in such cases, the cost of overnight lodging at the Seminary will be included in the Engle Fellowship).

(If you cancel your registration up to two weeks before the institute start date, your fees will be refunded, minus a $10 processing fee.)
