Monday - 6:30 p.m. through Thursday 11:30 a.m.
Erdman Center Course Description: In the Prelude to his latest book, Christ of the Celts, Philip Newell writes "There is a longing for peace deep within the human soul today. It is a yearning within us and between us in the most important relationships of our lives." However, when confronted by global political forces, individuals may feel drawn in a multitude of different directions. "Diagnosing the human soul with a longing for peace ... Newell offers the ancient traditions of Celtic Christianity as a way forward in healing humankind and the earth... We discover unity as we become connected to one another and allow ourselves to be surprised by the Presence that is within creation and within the human soul." (Publishers Weekly, May 2008). During this spiritual program and retreat, participants will learn about building better connections and will be guided on better practices. The schedule intentionally includes space for participants to reflect. J. Philip Newell is the former Warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland, and currently serves at the Scottish Cathedral of the Isles (Writer Theologian) as well as at the American Spirituality Centre of Casa del Sol in New Mexico (Companion Theologian). He has written extensively in his field of Celtic spirituality, including Listening for the Heartbeat of God and his poetic book of prayer Sounds of the Eternal. A Church of Scotland minister, he lives in Edinburgh with his family where he earned his doctorate in Celtic Christianity. His areas of specialty include ecumenical and interfaith dialogue and playing a leading role on both sides of the Atlantic in the re-birthing of a creation spirituality for today. J. Philip Newell's presence has been graciously underwritten by the F.I.S.H. Foundation. An acronym for Funding Individual Spiritual Health, the F.I.S.H.
