1:30 p.m. Mackay Campus Center - Main Lounge James Luther Adams (1901-1994) was a leading theologian and social ethicist of the 20th century. A graduate of Harvard Divinity School, he served two churches prior to teaching at Meadville/Lombard Theological School in Chicago (Unitarian Universalist). After earning a PhD. from the University of Chicago, he returned to teach at Harvard Divinity School, from where he retired. Themes of social justice and an intellectually accountable faith were of prominent importance. This lecture is an annual lecture sponsored by the James Luther Adams Foundation. Patrick D. Miller is Charles T. Haley Professor of Old Testament Theology Emeritus at Princeton Theological Seminary. Also a graduate of Harvard, his lecture today will focus on Adams' use of scripture in social ethics. Miller is a former President of the Society of Biblical Literature, and the author of numerous books and articles, including Deuteronomy (in the Interpretation series) and most recently The Way of the Lord: Essays in Old Testament Theology. He also serves as Editor of the Westminster Bible Companion commentary series and General Editor of the Abingdon Old Testament Commentaries as well as Old Testament Editor of the Interpretation series.
