From the Garden of Eden to the Garden of Gethsemane: A Journey through the Old Testament Texts for the Season of Lent
February 13–March 19, 2008 (six Wednesday evenings)
6:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m. each evening
Location: Erdman Hall, Cooper Conference Room
Course Description: The Old Testament texts assigned for the Sundays in the season of Lent (Year A, 2008) provide a sweeping overview of the great theological themes and events of the Old Testament: the fall in the Garden of Eden, the promise to Abraham and Sarah, Israel’s wilderness journey, the rise of King David, the hope of new life out of exile, and the Old Testament witness to Christ.
Designed for lay people but also open to clergy, this course will study each of these Old Testament texts, with theological reflections on their meanings for our world today. We will also put the Old Testament texts in dialogue with the corresponding Gospel texts assigned for each Sunday in Lent in order to create a theological conversation between the Old and New Testaments.
The Reverend Dennis T. Olson, Ph.D., an ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is Princeton Theological Seminary’s Charles T. Haley Professor of Old Testament Theology and chair of the Biblical Studies Department. He is committed to the continuing study of Scripture among all the people of God. Among his research interests is the relationship of biblical theology to the practice of ministry.
