This is an intensive course for medical, legal, and ministry professionals. Its goal is to present, for in-depth review and reflection, some of the key issues in biomedical ethics today, including reproductive health, cloning, stem cell research, mental health, and end-of-life issues. This course will provide professionals an opportunity to address these issues personally and theologically in an atmosphere fostering respectful and informed debate.
Course requirements include: weekly attendance and participation in class, weekly Blackboard online discussion, weekly readings, and videos.
Seminar Leader: Dr. Nancy J. Duff is the Stephen Colwell Associate Professor of Christian Ethics at Princeton Theological Seminary. As an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), she has published numerous essays on topics related to biomedical ethics. She has spoken before the National Bioethics Advisory Commission about human cloning and stem cell research, and was interviewed on MSNBC and WKTU radio in New York City about her views on the Terry Schiavo case.
Audience and Admission Requirements: This course will be open to professionals in ministry, chaplaincy, healthcare, law, and research sciences who have demonstrated professional interest in biomedical ethics. Admission to the course is subject to the approval of the instructor. Registration must be accompanied by a statement of not more than 50 words explaining how the course topics relate to your professional interest.
