Spirituality and Health

Course Description:
This course, taught by a theologian and a clinical psychologist/professor of religion, will analyze a wholistic understanding of health which connects the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions using a collaborative model among community agencies, pastoral caregivers, and faith communities. Critical examination of relationships among scientific medicine, complementary health care, spiritual disciplines, and religious beliefs and practices for good health outcomes. Demonstrations and information about health care practices and pastoral care methods of treatment and prevention of illness will be offered. This course is open to M.Div. and Th.M. students and Continuing Education enrollees.

Course Outcomes:
- Gain a broader understanding of health and sickness
- Analyze the relationship between religious beliefs and practices and good health outcomes
- Learn about complementary health care practices through demonstrations
- Develop a personal health plan based on self-assessment of current health status which includes spiritual practices
- Participate in discussions among pastors and health care professionals and M.Div. students in the same course together

Individuals who are theologically and intellectually curious about the connection between physical health and spiritual health.
Registration Fee:
Individuals may register for this program in two different time frames. Individuals may register for the first half of the course (six Wednesdays, from January 28 to March 5), or for the entire course.
