Richard R. Osmer fills two roles at the Seminary—he is both the Thomas W. Synnott Professor of Christian Education and the director of the School of Christian Education. He specializes in the history of education and the teaching ministry (and their interaction in different cultural settings), the nature of teaching, and the nature of practical theology as a distinct discipline of theology. An ordained Presbyterian minister, Dr. Osmer began his career as a minister to United Methodist churches in New England and North Carolina. Since 1994, he has served as the chair of the Special Committee to Write New Catechisms for the Presbyterian Church (USA).  51 Osmer.jpg (10308 bytes) A member of the Association of Practical Theology, where he served as president in 1991 and on whose executive board he still sits, Dr. Osmer appreciates that the Seminary is “solidly grounded in the Reformed tradition, but is open to contemporary issues and ecumenical perspectives."
