Timothy Scholars Program Begins at Princeton Seminary
Princeton, NJ, May 19, 2006–Princeton Theological Seminary is pleased to announce that the Foundation for Evangelism (FFE), an affiliate of the United Methodist Church’s General Board of Discipleship, has approved the inauguration of the Timothy Scholars Program at the Seminary.
This program, part of the foundation’s effort to assist seminaries in making education for youth and young adult ministry more widely available to church leaders, consists of a scholarship initiative to support future seminary teachers in Christian higher education. Princeton Seminary was chosen because it is the home of the Princeton Theological Seminary Institute for Youth Ministry.
“We are very pleased with Princeton Seminary’s effectiveness in developing leadership for youth and campus ministry across the church, and we are delighted with the acceptance and support of the program shown by President [Iain Torrance] and Dean [Darrell Guder],” said Paul Ervin, FFE’s executive director and CEO. The foundation also designated the Reverend Kenda Creasy Dean, Ph.D., a United Methodist clergywoman and associate professor of youth, church and culture at Princeton, to serve as program mentor
Those chosen as Timothy Scholars are women and men whose doctoral education focuses on ministry with young people, understood in the context of practical or missional theology. The scholarships will provide five years of funding for two Ph.D. students each year for the next ten years. The 2006 Timothy Scholars are the Reverend Drew Dyson, a United Methodist pastor, and Jason B. Santos, a recent graduate of Princeton Seminary. They will both begin their degrees in practical theology this September in the Seminary’s School of Christian Education.
