Given the Globe

Award-winning poet Micheal O’Siadhail reads from his latest work, Globe

Tuesday, March 11, 2008
6:30–8:30 p.m.
Location: Erdman Center, Cooper Conference Room

In his latest collection, Dublin poet Micheal O’Siadhail explores the questions:
• How do the past and our memories bear on the present?
• What kind of people help to alter the dynamics of history?
• How do we face the open wounds of irreversible tragedies and loss?

O’Siadhail’s “Angel of Change” provides a climax to the work, exposing the raw vulnerabilities and encompassing the improvisational opportunities of a world changing and morphing within each nanosecond of time. Consider the ubiquity of cyberspace, the proliferation of the 24/7 economic marketplace, the diversity of peoples coming together with shifting boundaries and uncertain values, and ponder, with O’Siadhail: “Born in a land, I wake in a globe.”

Micheal O’Siadhail was born in 1947, educated at Trinity College Dublin, where he has since lectured, and is a full-time writer living in Dublin. He has publicly read his poetry throughout Europe, Britain, Ireland, and North America, including at Harvard and Yale Universities. In addition to numerous volumes of poetry including Love Life (2005) and The Gossamer Wall (2002), he has contributed to literary and academic works including Poetry Ireland Review, for which he has been past editor, and Learning Irish. He was the founding chairman of ILE (Ireland Literature Exchange).
