Meet the Authors
Bloomfield Avenue, A Memoir
The Author: Linda Mercadante
The Book: Bloomfield Avenue: A Jewish-Catholic Jersey Girl’s Spiritual Journey
Tuesday, April 1, 2008
6:30–8:30 p.m.
Location: Erdman Center, Cooper Conference Room
In this memoir, Dr. Mercadante traces her ongoing spiritual journey from her childhood in the Newark, New Jersey, apartment above the bakery owned by her Italian Catholic father and Jewish mother. Her experiments with identity take her from her roots in Catholicism, to a WASP sorority, atheism, Eastern mysticism, and vegetarianism. Her quest for meaningful work as an airline stewardess, and then a journalist, led to her current work in the realms of academia and theology. Those from “mixed backgrounds” can find inspiration in Mercadante’s journey to make of herself “a new thing.”
Linda Mercadante, an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), earned her doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary, and is currently professor of theology in the B. Robert Straker Chair in Historical Theology at Methodist Theological School in Ohio.

“I wanted to climb
those cathedral towers…
go to the top and look
out over the world and
make some sense of it.”
