Working with Immigrants: Legal, Social, and Cultural Challenges

This workshop is designed to help participants address the special needs and problems faced by immigrant and refugee communities. Emphasis will be on the development of knowledge of unique challenges faced by immigrants, refugees, and displaced persons, and on the skills and values necessary to the competent delivery of responsive and culturally sensitive services. The morning session will provide an overview of the legal issues facing immigrants, as well as the legal framework within which faith communities and other nonprofit organizations must operate in serving the immigrant populations. The afternoon session will introduce participants to experiences and adjustment challenges of immigrants, and will provide an overview of resources available for assistance, intervention, and advocacy.

The afternoon session has been approved for professional continuing education credit for licensed social workers by the New Jersey State Board of Social Work Examiners.

Seminar Leaders: Amy Gottlieb, Esq. is the program director for the Immigrant Rights Program of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in Newark, New Jersey, an organization dedicated to promoting the rights of immigrants and refugees. The International Institute of New Jersey is a non-profit organization serving the immigrants in the state of New Jersey.
