Social workers are on the front lines experiencing the day-to-day crises facing patients/clients and their families. We interact with individuals experiencing acute and chronic emotional distress. As such, social workers are at risk for experiencing compassion fatigue (C.F.), also known as secondary or vicarious trauma. This workshop will use both didactic and experiential methods to address the stressful work environments of health and mental healthcare social workers. Participants will have opportunity to reflect on unique issues associated with working in their particular settings. Key objectives are to distinguish between compassion fatigue and burnout, recognize symptoms of C.F., and identify solutions within the context of particular social work settings. The workshop will equip clinicians with a clinical intervention method that has potential to identify risk factors of C.F. and can also be used with patients/clients, students, and interdisciplinary teams.
