The Art of Empathic Confrontation: Working with Difficult People

Monday, December 11, 2006
9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

This course is being offered by the Continuing Education and Professional Development Program of the School of Social Work at Rutgers University, and is offered at its Livingston Campus in Piscataway, New Jersey.

Location: Rutgers University Livingston Campus, Building 4161, Piscataway, NJ

Everyone, client and therapist alike, has experienced it: the sense of intimidation, anger, and frustration that happens when we’re faced with an aggressive person in attack mode. How can we help our clients and ourselves develop skills for dealing with these people? And how can we help our clients, especially those who are narcissistic or borderline, when they’re the ones on the attack? In this workshop, we will explore a variety of approaches for avoiding unproductive power struggles and learn to maintain compassion through curiosity and comment without criticism. Through videotapes of sessions, role-plays, case studies, and discussion, we will explore strategies to maintain poise and effectiveness under difficult circumstances.

Instructor: Wendy Terrie Behary, L.C.S.W.

Audience: Social workers and ministry professionals

Registration Fee: $110
